NOVI, Mich., May 1, 2009 – On April 27, the Novi City Council approved its first Brownfield project for the Oxid Corporation. Oxid will be located at 25275 Regency Drive. A Brownfield refers to industrial or commercial property that is underused and will be redeveloped. Oxid will breathe new life into this parcel, further enhancing Novi’s stake as a strong economic engine.
A total of 25 jobs would be created/retained at the Novi location. Oxid makes a practice of hiring workers who can grow into higher level jobs based on their previous education and experience level. In addition to their direct hires, Oxid uses several local subcontractors for all of its machining, sheet metal, and circuit board work. These support companies will also be hiring new workers. The existing buildings have been underutilized since their construction in the early 2000s. Oxid is looking to relocate to 25275 Regency North, which offers 40% more space (22,000 square-feet) than their existing location in Farmington Hills. The next step in the process is for the Plan to be approved by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners after a public notice and a public hearing as provided by statute.

Oxid was founded in 1980. It
manufactures high-power laser beam delivery systems and components
that are used in industrial manufacturing, medical laser system beam
delivery components, and recently department of defense contracts.
Initially these components were used in industrial laser systems by
various customers. By 1986 a significant market started to develop
for human medical laser system beam delivery components. Oxid
Corporation was formed in 1986 to sell and service to this segment
of the market, and is now a recognized brand name world-wide in
medical laser beam delivery. Oxid Corporation subcontracts its
manufacturing to Laser Mechanisms, Inc., which is located in the
same building complex on Regency Drive. Oxid also contracts for its
management, sales, and engineering labor to develop and sell new

Preh to supply climate
control electronic system for 2010 Ford Mustang

Preh, a German supplier of automotive driver controls and sensors, has been awarded a contract to develop and supply the new electronic system for climate control for the 2010 Ford Mustang. According to Preh, the system comprises an electronic control unit (ECU) and software with the necessary control algorithms to achieve a comfortable in-cabin climate for the driver and passengers.

Irish firm Thru-U.com
opens Novi office, plans to grow staff

Second verse same as the first. Thru-U.com has opened a Novi office and plans to expand its staff there. "We'll be adding people to the Detroit market as we expand," says Brent Krahn, senior sales executive for Thru-U.com.

Tata puts own name on Novi
engineering firm

The Tata Group, with its groundbreaking Nano vehicle, has been the talk of the world. Now, the automaker will become a more familiar name in metro Detroit. Monday, Novi-based automotive engineering firm Incat International, which Tata bought five years ago, will officially become Tata Technologies, as the Indian conglomerate spreads its brand name.

Novi-based Hino Trucks has introduced HinoStyle, a line of stainless steel accessories that will add a custom look, resale value and aesthetic appeal to 2005-2010 model year Hino trucks. Hino also has partnered with the popular CMT television series, “Trick My Truck.” Hino will be a featured partner in the weekly national show and will once again trick out a Hino Model 338 with a Western Hauler body ultimately being utilized as a Toyota Racing Division race car hauler.

Novi-based BrassCraft, a plumbing supplier, has introduced new products, including brass stops, solid brass fittings and Speedi Plumb Plus connectors, compliant with California and Vermont legislation, that — effective January 1, 2010 — will limit the lead content of pipes, pipe fittings or plumbing fittings/fixtures intended for drinking water.

The 24th Annual Economic Outlook Luncheon will be held at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi on Thursday April 30, 2009. Top economists from the University of Michigan will present their report on the economic future of Oakland County. Entrepreneurs Have Big Plans For Wind Power

Two Michigan entrepreneurs say they plan to begin putting thousands of people to work in the wind energy industry this summer. Global Wind Systems Inc. says it will employ 300 at its Novi assembly operations by this fall, building the central hubs of huge 1.5 megawatt wind turbines. CEO Chris Long likens the hubs to “70-ton school buses” in shape and size.

Manager Back From European Tech Tour

Novi's city manager is back from a week-long trip to Germany and the United Kingdom visiting several automotive technology companies, and says he believes developing the region's economy around "intelligent transportation" is a real possibility. City Manager Clay Pearson visited Harman/Becker, an automotive audio maker that consolidated plants from California and Indiana into Novi, and Vector, a software developer for auto systems that's based near Stuttgart that also has 90 employees in Novi.

If you're a good IT technician, then there is a good chance Red Level Networks is looking for you. The Novi-based firm started with its founder, Dave King, and four quality IT techs eight years ago. Today the IT firm employs 14 people and two independent contractors. It recently added two people to its payroll and is looking for a few more employees to fill its ranks. "We're always looking for good IT engineers," says Jennifer Swiderski, marketing manager for Red Level Networks.

Plan for trail on M-5's
west side to be addressed Thursday

The Michigan Department of Transportation will hold an open house from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Thursday on a proposed trail from 13 Mile to 14 Mile roads on the west side of M-5. The department is working to design the trail and wants public input before finalizing it. Construction on the trail is slated to start in the spring of 2010.

ITC Holdings Corp. posted a nearly 49 percent increase in net income in 2008, with earnings of $109.2 million or $2.19 a share that compared with earnings of $73.3 million or $1.68 a share in 2007. The Novi-based company’s operating revenue climbed to nearly $617.9 million in 2008, from $426.2 million in 2007.

ITC Holdings Corp. (NYSE: ITC) today announced its fourth quarter results for the period ended December 31, 2008. Net income for the quarter was $27.0 million, or $0.54 per diluted share, compared to $15.6 million, or $0.36 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of 2007. Net income for the full year was $109.2 million, or $2.19 per diluted share, compared to $73.3 million, or $1.68 per diluted share in 2007.

At a time when critical infrastructure security is a national priority, ITC Holdings Corp. (NYSE: ITC) has been recognized for its efforts to safeguard the reliability of the high voltage electric system in Michigan. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), an international regulatory authority for the reliability of the bulk power system in North America, cited ITC's system security operations as an Example of Excellence as part of its Reliability Readiness Evaluation and Improvement Program. Japanese
martial arts show opens in Novi

An international exhibit on martial arts and Japanese culture has opened in Novi -- its only Michigan stop. The Japan Foundation, an organization specializing in cultural exchange, is responsible for "The Spirit of Budo: The History of Japan's Martial Arts," which will be on display at the Novi Civic Center through March 13. After Novi, the exhibit -- which began its tour in 2007 -- will go to Paris. Why Novi? "There is a great interest in Japanese culture," said Anita Savio, a spokeswoman for the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit.

What's not as attractive is creating the infrastructure to transport all that alternative energy to population centers out in the middle of nowhere. Novi-based ITC Holdings is creating that infrastructure and investing between $10 billion and $12 billion to make it happen. ITC owns much of the electric grid not only in Michigan but in the Midwest.

Services to invest $2.2 million to expand operations

Patrick Energy Services, the provider of engineering, program and construction management services for high-voltage electric infrastructure and smart grid technologies plans to invest $2.2 million to expand operations in Novi. The project is expected to create 185 new jobs, including 90 directly by the company. Based on the MEDC’s recommendation, the MEGA board approved a state tax credit valued at $1.5 million to help convince the company to expand in Michigan. The City of Novi has approved additional administrative assistance to support the project.

A Michigan company wants to build a network of transmission lines across the Midwest that could carry enough wind-generated electricity for millions of homes. The grid in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana would eventually include 3,000 miles of 756,000-volt transmission lines to deliver wind power to Chicago and points east.

VI: Laser Mechanisms relocates headquarters

Laser Mechanisms Inc. announced the move of its corporate headquarters from Farmington Hills, Michigan to Novi, Michigan. The 22,000 sq./ft. facility houses corporate offices, sales, and engineering. In addition, an adjacent 28,000 sq./ft. building is being completed for manufacturing and warehousing operations. The two facilities together will nearly double Laser Mechanisms' previous square footage.

fog in the rest of the country. Landry offered this assessment
of the municipality during his annual State of the City address at
Rock Financial Showplace to an audience that included residents and
members of the Novi Chamber of Commerce. "In 2009 Novi,
Michigan is doing just fine," Landry said after outlining the city's
many accomplishments in 2008, including the ground breaking of a new
57,000-square-foot library that will open in 2010.

Moving walkways, doors that open by pushing a button on a wristband and cities built in layers were a fraction of the ideas from 800 students representing 25 middle schools competing Wednesday in the Michigan Future City Competition in Novi. The students' challenge this year was to create a self-sufficient city where homes conserved, recycled and reused water. Their only limit was their imagination. Most teams spent upward of 100 hours developing their projects.
