The City of Novi recently adopted new ordinances and procedures in order to become a film friendly community. As part of Novi’s goal to attract the film industry, the City is looking to create a database of citizens interested in being cast as extras in movies or commercials filmed in their community.
“This is an opportunity for the residents of Novi to possibly garner their 15 minutes of fame and be involved in the local film industry,” said Ara Topouzian, Novi’s Economic Development Manager. “It will be up to the film companies to utilize the offered database. Offering a database of potential actors in another aspect of becoming film friendly in Novi.”

October 31, 2008, Novi, Michigan – City of Novi Assistant City Manager Pamela Antil took part in the Oakland County on Film seminar hosted by the Oakland County Department of Economic Development and Community Affairs department on Tuesday, October 28 at the Somerset Inn in Troy, Michigan.
With roughly 100 attendees, the seminar focused on the current Michigan film incentive industry, and how municipalities can prepare for and encourage filming in their community. Antil led two of the discussions; what you can ask from the film industry and the economic benefits to the City of Novi. Antil also announced the launch of the Novi Film Office to the group.
“We are pleased to welcome
television and film makers to Novi and believe the industry will
have a positive economic benefit in Novi and southeast Michigan,”
said Antil. Antil, along with Economic Development Manager
Ara Topouzian and Fire Marshal Mike Evans, have led efforts to make
the City of Novi more film friendly. Their efforts have
resulted in the Novi City Council approving an outdoor gathering
ordinance specifically geared towards promoting film production, a
streamlined film permit process and a portion of investnovi.org devoted towards
the movie industry.
“Novi’s film permit process was designed to fit the business needs of the film industry which requires quick permitting turn around time and flexibility while still protecting the health and safety of the community,” said Antil. “Hollywood Novi is open for business.” For more information about filming in Novi, visit investnovi.org/film to connect to the Novi Film Office, permit application and related documents and information.

Novi’s
Oberweis Ice Cream & Dairy StoreOn Saturday, October 25th from 1:00pm through 4:00pm, the Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store at 43168 Grand River in the Novi Town Center will celebrate Halloween by hosting a magic Show. The show will feature magician Dave Foydel. Mr. Foydel has been a professional magician since 1994 and learned his craft as child when his father, a retired firefighter, purchased a magic shop and began teaching Dave tricks. In addition to Oberweis, Dave has performed for the Northville department of Parks and Recreation, Oakland Mall, Magic 105 and Fox 2. He also has a series of instructional videos at www.expertvillage.com.
According to Mike McDonald, owner of the Oberweis store, "we are really trying to do a big event each quarter. Back in July we had a petting farm that even included a llama. We continue to be focused on providing not only a great product but a memorable experience as well. We wanted to do something around Halloween, but we didn’t want to be scary and magic seemed to be a fit. Dave came highly recommended not only because of his magic, but also his sense of humor and his ability to tailor his show to an audience that includes both adults and children." "We’ve got something really special planned around Christmas as well, but we’ll keep that one a secret for now, " McDonald continues.
"We don’t only want to be considered special because of these bigger events. We always want to deliver an experience that can only be gotten at our store. Whether it’s dessert after a movie, a birthday party through our partnership with Build a Bear or just a trip to our store to buy our milk in glass bottles, it needs to be special. That’s why every child that comes in our store gets a balloon. We don’t want the coming to our store to be an errand or chore, it should always be a welcomed trip."
For more information about the magic show, or the Oberweis store in general, please contact Mike McDonald at 248-348-8850.

SecurStar Announces
New Mobile Phone Encryption Software PhoneCryptMilitary grade encryption for mobile devices, security and privacy assured with "PhoneCrypt".
NOVI, Michigan (USA), September 24, 2008 – SecurStar, a German based multinational company specializing in data security and information, today announced the release of a new product software PhoneCrypt, data encryption software for mobile phones and smartphones.
PhoneCrypt is professional phone encryption software that effectively protects your communication against eavesdropping and interception by encrypting confidential conversations and data using ultra-strong 4096 bit military grade encryption.
A recent consumer survey on smartphone usage, revealed that 70 percent of respondents access what they deem to be sensitive information on their smartphone device when away from the office. The "Smartphone Protection Consumer Survey," notes that today’s businesses have become "always on" environments, with employees becoming increasingly reliant upon mobile devices for connectivity when on the road or away from the office. This constant connectivity to company systems, without appropriate protections in place, can create tremendous vulnerabilities in the IT security infrastructure as the devices themselves become smaller, more powerful and more susceptible to loss or theft.
Now available in the U.S., PhoneCrypt is especially designed to ensure secure communication and complete integrated protection for corporate or private data on PDAs, Smart Phones & Handheld Devices. PhoneCrypt phone encryption software not only protects two-way cellular phone communications, it also protects data stored on a mobile device, by encrypting data, such as confidential documents, financial files, emails, etc. PhoneCrypt encrypts your conversations with an unbreakable cipher (AES and Diffie-Hellmann). To place a secured telephone call, both parties need to have the PhoneCrypt software installed on their phones. Conversations and data will remain secure even if the device is stolen or lost.
PhoneCrypt is an innovative software solution, compatible with Windows Mobile. Once installed on the phone's operating system, it transforms a mobile device into an encrypted high-security device, guarding against all types of threats.
For more information about SecurStar's new product PhoneCrypt and other security products, visit www.securstar.com.
SecurStar was founded in 2001 with its headquarters in Munich, Germany. Low Price Window
Companies on the Rise

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 3, 2008
Contact: Gina Schumer
Window World 330-726-0200
(Novi, MI) - According to the July/August 2008 issue of “Replacement Contractor” Magazine, the traditional way of buying and selling replacement windows is changing rapidly. Window World, the pioneer among low-priced window retailers and the leader in the market is riding high on the new trend; the new Window World in Novi, a prime example.
Historically, traditional window replacement companies implement two to three hour in-home presentations to demonstrate products, using multiple sales methods with complicated pricing structures. The price is usually not advertised because it is determined by the “sale of the day” or “large discount” taken from an inflated price.
Enter Window World, the company that turned the replacement window industry upside down. In 1995 Leo Whitworth in a roadside stand in Wilmington, North Carolina decided early on that he wasn’t going to be like everyone else. The Window World way would be simple, provide superior products, installed by professional craftsmen, guaranteeing low prices, Simply the Best for Less. His plan worked, and in 2007, Window World dealers installed 1,092,000 windows, more than any other window replacement company in the U.S.
Father and son team, Fred and Pat Moran bought into Whitworth’s new business model in 2003, opening a Window World in Youngstown, Ohio. The following year, they opened locations in Pittsburgh and Erie, PA. Locations in Toledo, OH and Ann Arbor soon followed. In July, the Moran’s opened their sixth Window World at 48661 Grand River Avenue in Novi with high expectations of success.
“The secret to our success is our value. Our $189 priced window is the window we sell the most, says Fred Moran. “It’s fully welded frames, 7/8” double pane insulated glass and has a lifetime warranty. Because of the large volume we do, nobody can touch our price.” Window World windows and other products are manufactured by AMI, Akron, Ohio.
This past year, Window World received the prestigious Good Housekeeping seal on their full line of windows, only one out of five replacement window companies in the country to do so.
Sales at Window World don’t seem to be effected by the economy’s slump, as Fred and Pat Moran are experiencing double digit increases for 2008. They expect greater gains this year, as energy conscious consumers are looking to improve the efficiency of their homes by replacing their windows with more energy efficient windows, as recommended by ENERGY STAR. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping people save money and protects the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Consumers can visit www.energystar.gov to determine how efficient their home is now and find solutions for better efficiency.
What makes a window energy efficient? According the Fred Moran, of Window World, the fully welded frame and double pane glass of their 4000 series window reduces heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer months. The optional glass package includes Solarban 60 Low-E Glass, a special coating that reflects infrared light , keeping heat inside in winter and outside in summer. The package also includes argon gas, filled between the panes for better insulation than regular air. “The ‘energy efficient’ glass package usually reduces heating bills by as much as 35%, notes Moran. “So the windows pay for themselves.”
Another energy efficient option also available by Window World is “Prodigy” insulated home siding. Designed with an R-value of 5.0, the siding offers five times the energy efficiency of ordinary siding. The insulation is 1 ½” thick and wraps the home in an unbroken blanket. Yet Prodigy breathes freely to resist water retention.
Interested homeowners can see the windows, siding and other products from Window World by visiting their new showroom at 48661 Grand River Avenue in Novi, between Wixom and Beck Roads. The showroom is open Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm. Free in-home no obligation consultations are available daily and weekends and can be made by calling Window World at 1-800-NEXTWINDOW (639-8946) or the local number at 248-347-0100.

NOVI, Mich., August 12, 2008 – On Monday, August 11, the Novi City Council approved an ordinance amendment that will make getting bigger easier for developers and builders doing business in Novi.
One significant change allows an increase in the size of additions to existing buildings that could be reviewed and approved administratively to no more than 10 percent of an existing building, up to a maximum of 10,000 square feet, for non-residential buildings located more than 500 feet from residential districts. This amendment was to Section 2516.1c(9).
“Minor changes to approved site plans rarely contain substantial issues,” commented Steve Rumple, City of Novi Community Development Manager. “We anticipate that reducing the processing time for improvements such as these will encourage more reinvestment in commercial properties.”
The second change increased the length of time a site plan approval would remain valid, doubling the time a site plan approval remains active from one year to two years. The amendment to Section 2516.6 will reduce the need for site plan extension actions by City Council or the Novi Planning Commission. Site plan extensions remain the same, allowing for three, one-year extensions of preliminary or final site plan approval.
“The changes made to the Zoning Ordinance will allow developers to get through the site plan approval process in a quicker fashion,” notes Rumple. “We are excited to provide a streamlined process to those looking to build within Novi.”
